Star Wars 8 Last Jedi: The TRUTH on Poe and Finn ‘gay romance’ rumours
STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI star Oscar Isaac has spoken out on ongoing speculation about his character Poe Dameron being on course for a same-sex relationship
Fans have long been rooting for his character to launch a relationship with Finn (John Boyega), after they struck up a friendship in 2015’s Episode 7: The Force Awakens.
Any such romance would be a landmark moment for the long-running franchise, which has never portrayed an LGBT romance on-screen in the main saga.
Asked by Collider what the speculation “means” to him, Isaac said: “Well what it means to me is that people can see themselves in a hero like this, in a movie like this, which I love.
“Not only LGBT [fans] but Latinos… there’s a representation out there for that.
As to actually seeing how that manifests in Poe - that isn’t necessarily going to be a clear story point in this one [Episode 8].
“But as an actor I’m very open to those possible storylines and i don’t think it needs to be nailed down in any kind of traditional way.”
Another character who has been thought to be LGBT+ is Laura Dern’s Vice Admiral Holdo, after fans picked up on a telling passage in a novel.
Dern, however, admitted that she is “oblivious” to much of her character’s history elsewhere in the Star Wars canon.
